A Spirit of Power, Discipline, and Love

Ryan Lowery
2 Timothy 1:6-7

Paul reminds Timothy that God has not given him a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and discipline. We live in a fear based culture, and are encouraged towards fear everyday. Fear is not from God and is a major barrier to doing good things for Him. While fear motivates us to focus on ourselves, love motivates us to meet the needs of others. This teaching includes a testimony from Nate Norris about a series of personal hardships that lead him to trust God in the midst of fear.

1 Kings: Coming Down from Mt. Carmel

Scott Risley
1 Kings 19

King Ahab's wife, Jezebel, is furious that Elijah executed Baal's prophets. She sends Elijah a death threat, so he flees, begging God to end his life of suffering and fear. Instead, God sends a raven with food and Elijah travels to Mount Sinai. The Lord pulls Elijah out of his spiritual depression by offering him rest, listening to his complaints, renewing his perspective, and continuing his mission.

Fracture!

Dennis McCallum
1 Kings 11:26-14:26

The fracture of Israel comes from the sin of Jeroboam which is referenced again throughout Kings. Jeroboams' anxiety and doubt in God lead him to place idols in Israel to foreign gods because he didn't have faith that God could meet his needs and protect his position as King. We are not immune to this heart attitude. We too have our idols that we turn to when we think God is not sufficient enough to meet our needs. This leads to a weak church and leads to leaders who compromise their morals in order to retain their followers.

Disputing with God

Jim Leffel
1 Corinthians 10:13

Jeremiah complains and accuses God because he is suffering. God responds to Jeremiah with assurance that He will restore him and protect him if Jeremiah simply chooses to return to God. God assures Jeremiah that God is his fortress; this is reminder for Jeremiah from earlier that He will make Jeremiah strong like walls. Walls are useless until tested; Jeremiah is now being tested through suffering. Jeremiah does end up choosing to return to the Lord in grace and he was restored to God's work

On Trial

Ryan Lowery
Acts 25:14-26:31

When Paul makes his way to Jerusalem, he must give a defense to a variety of different parties. At the core of his defense is that he is a Christian by reason as he explains that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament. We should seek out evidence and be willing to respond to what we see. Believers should be prepared to boldly make a defense through personal testimony and through Scripture.

Paul at Ephesus

Ryan Lowery
Acts 19:1-19

Though many at Ephesus claimed to be followers of Christ, it isn't until Paul came to them that they received the Holy Spirit. This passage isn't teaching a Pentecostal theology, but indicates that not all who think they are believers have received Christ. Several points about the Holy Spirit can be gleaned from this passage: 1) the Holy Spirit is God's pledge of our spiritual life; 2) the Holy Spirit is what empowers change; 3) the Holy Spirit is what empowers us to be used by God in others' lives; 4) empowerment by the Spirit may include God working supernaturally; 5) it is dangerous to do God's work without His power; and 6) the Holy Spirit can free us from fear.

More Ministry Principles from Paul?s Life

Ryan Lowery
Acts 18:1-18

In the ancient world, Corinth was a city known for immorality. As Paul goes there to preach the gospel, there are several lessons that we can learn: 1) Paul paid his own way to avoid accusation; 2) some people will be offended at the message; 3) many will respond to the message; 4) even Paul had great fear; and 5) you never know who will respond. Those that are willing to tell others about Christ will experience the same adventure that Paul did, and will see that God is just as active today as he was in the early church.

The Letter to Smyrna

Patrik Matthews
Revelation 2:8-11

Jesus writes to the church in Smyrna that they are going to undergo suffering due to slander, poverty, and affliction. The ultimate cause of this suffering is Satan. Jesus tells them to not give into their fear - that they can be faithful when they go through suffering because: he has experienced suffering too, he knows what is going to happen to them, and he is able to give them what is truly valuable. We too can look to Jesus' call to faithfulness and pursue what's valuable.

Timidity or Bold Love

Dennis McCallum
2 Timothy 1:6-10

Using your spiritual gifts or building a ministry is God's will for us but fear can get in the way of this goal. Fear holds us back from doing what God wants. It makes it very hard to take risks and ultimately leads to self-protection. God's will is that Christians overcome fear. Through faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit, a life of timidity can be transformed into a life of bold love. A life of power, love, and sound judgment can meet the needs of a dying world.
