Jesus and the Woman in the Crowd

Mark 5:21-43

The story of the woman in the crowd who had a bleeding disorder demonstrates that Jesus is a man of compassion, the healer of hopeless situations, the inviter of outcasts, the rewarder of faith, and that Jesus' power is absolutely adequate. Sickness and death are symbols of our alienation from God. Jesus' power over them is proof he has the power to fulfill his mission to reconcile us. All of us will encounter hopeless situations at some time. When that happens, Jesus invites us to put our faith, however small it might be, in him.

Five Ways to Experience God's Power

Philippians 3:9-15

When Paul talks about the power of the resurrection, he is not referring to life after death but the actual power that can raise the dead. This same power is also what fuels spiritual growth. The five ways to experience God's power in spiritual growth is 1. Share in Jesus' suffering, 2. Forget what happened in the past, 3. Reach forward, 4. Press on and 5. Respond to God's guidance. God changes lives; will you respond to his invitation?

Paul longs to experience the power of Jesus' resurrection, not the resurrection to eternal life, but the resurrection power of living a victorious life. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us to live a life for Jesus, but it requires sharing in his suffering. As we allow suffering to strip away our self-sufficiency it allows God's power to shine through us to his glory.

Jesus' Millenial Kingdom

Revelation 20:1-10

The Millennial Kingdom is the period of time after the church age ends. It is a thousand years of Jesus and his resurrected followers reigning over the mortal survivors of the Tribulation. Satan will be bound during this time. People will live long without illness. After the thousand years, Satan will be released to deceive the nations one final time but he will be destroyed and thrown into the lake of fire forever and ever. \r\n\r\nIt will be a period of true social justice and lasting world peace. There will be world-wide spiritual enlightenment and a time of unprecedented celebration and joy. Nature will be substantially restored.

The afterlife is what makes this life have any sense at all. If you are a billionaire in this life, it only lasts for the blink of an eye in light of eternity. If we understand where we are headed in eternity, it should dramatically influence how we live, the choices we make, the attitudes we adopt. We will accept suffering, forget what lies behind, reach forward to what lies ahead, press on, and have an eternal perspective.

The person of Jesus demonstrated that he was both fully human and yet still fully divine. He chose to set aside his divine abilities to live as a human so that he could fully experience all the things we experience. The work of Jesus on the cross was necessary because real forgiveness is costly suffering. The one who forgives bears the cost of the sin. God humbled himself to identify with us and die for us.

The Beasts of Revelation 13

Revelation 13:1-18

In Revelation, John describes the three beasts that will be revealed during The Tribulation period, the dragon, the antichrist, and the false prophet. Much of John's language is cryptic and some of it is impossible to understand until it is revealed and then it will be unmistakable. Some possible reactions to this uncertainty is skepticism, unhealthy speculation, or fear. The best response is faith. God has given us so much prophesy that has come true that we can have confident faith that these mystifying prophesies will also come true in due time. In the mean time we should be trusting and obeying what we do know to be true from Scripture. God wins in the end and we have eternal life in him. Our focus must be on sharing his good news with others who do not know him yet.

Taking a Stand

Philippians 1:27-30

Standing for Christ by standing firm in one spirit and of one mind makes sense because the mission is eternal and therefore worth the sacrifice. Our real citizenship is in heaven and we will be there relatively soon and for ever. Christian community for its own sake is fruitless. It must be in the context of a common mission of sacrificial servant love. Is it difficult? Yes, but so worth it!
